Like I Ain’t – Tech N9ne

Not being a huge fan of hip hop, my knowledge of the scene is lacking. However, one hip hop artist that seems to come up often among the rock scene is Tech N9ne. He has never shied away from the fact that he is a fan of rock and roll. On the contrary, he has collaborated with a plethora of members of the rock scene, notably Corey Taylor from Slipknot and Serj Tankian from System of a Down. Getting to the actual track, “Like I Ain’t” is a single off of Tech N9ne’s new album “N9NA” out April 19, 2019. Despite my attention being drawn due to the Slipknot reference in the second verse, this song is 100% hip hop. With a beat based on a drum roll that is reminiscent of a lot of modern hip hop, N9ne delivers 3 verses with background repetition to emphasis the end of multiple lines. The lyrical content can be described as a list of achievements. Although personally I have never been a fan of lyrics that stroke an ego, this track seems to be more about proving haters wrong rather than puffing himself up. N9ne brings up a lot of collaborations on this track, mentioning 2Pac, Eminem and Corey Taylor of Slipknot among others. Like I stated earlier, my knowledge of hip hop is very limited. With that in mind, to me this track sounds a lot like the popular hip hop of today but with verses that actually mean something and Tech N9ne’s rapping done skillfully. If you are a fan of hip hop, you will enjoy this track however it is nothing extraordinary.
